A Run/Bike Tour of Egypt | 350 Miles on a Broken Spinergy Wheel|

In February 2000 I took my road
bike to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. Here in Egypt, I would
cycle 200 miles along the Nile and run a marathon in
Luxor. My first ride was a short roundtrip from Cairo to
Giza. It's only 10 miles one-way, but a demanding one in
dangerous traffic. Not recommended for the faint of
heart. Here I just gave a Hot Wheels car (my calling
card) to my little friend, under the watchful eye of the
Sphinx, Abul-Hul (the father of terror). |

Here's
a shot of the Nile just south of Luxor.
The road is on the east side of the river. This view is
to the north. This was my biggest day totalling 160
miles. It's 130 direct from Luxor to Aswan plus 30 more
"tourist miles" to get to Esna and Edfu temples
and the Aswan dam. Flat roads and a tailwind helped. All
along the way, people were friendly and curious: my
10-year old carbon fiber Trek 2100 bike and Spinergy
wheels caused quite a sensation wherever I went. Here is
a typical 30 second photo stop. Field workers see me and
drop what they're doing to come see and try to talk to
me. A little Arabic goes a LONG way: Ahlan=Hello!
Ismee=My name is...

This is Luxor, or ancient Thebes, in the
southern part of Egypt. A nice view down on the
(funerary) Temple of Hatshepsut. This temple was the
start and finish for the Egyptian Marathon, a 26-mile
running race on Feb 11, 2000. Also in this area are the
Valley of the Kings (containing Tutunkhamen's Tomb), the
Valley of the Queens, and a number of other temples. This
picture is on Feb 10, the only day it rained (a misty
drizzle) in Luxor all year. And of course, not an
umbrella salesman in sight.
